Obituary of Barbara Louise Franklin
Barbara was born in Waltham, Massachusetts and was raised in Steubenville, Ohio where she worked alongside her two sisters in the family’s dry-cleaning business. She attended The Ohio State University where she earned her teaching degree and met her husband, Donald. Barbara enjoyed teaching second grade in Columbus, Ohio, where she and her husband resided. Teaching her students how to read brought her great joy, and like most teachers, she quietly supplemented classroom supplies out of her own pocket. Barbara and Don delighted in the sun and Gulf beaches of Sarasota, Florida, where they lived for 20 years before moving to Portland, OR to be with their daughter and son-in-law. Barbara was an avid reader, had a wicked sense of humor, and took pleasure in entertaining family and friends in her home. She always took the time to reach out and support friends and family in their time of need. No one was ever forgotten on her watch. She was a loving wife and mother. Survivors include her husband, Donald, and her daughter, Heidi (Jason). Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel, her father, Sam, and her sisters Harriett and Natalie. A memorial service will be held at the Pollin Chapel at Congregation Beth Israel on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.
